ABSTRACT : Immersive technologies are emerging as a valuable educational resource, although the pedagogical effectiveness of knowledge acquisition in Immersive Virtual Environments (IVEs) has not been conclusively established. However, the immersion provided by IVEs, combined with the digital twin of a machine, closely mirrors the authentic interaction an engineering student would experience when using the machine in an industrial setting. This article introduces a doctoral project aiming to determine the educational contexts in which the use of a virtual reality device is relevant and justified for engineering training. The research intends to compare various evaluation modalities of a virtual reality system’s usability with other media in diverse learning contexts. Drawing from learning psychology literature, the project will assess knowledge acquisition for effectiveness, cognitive load for efficiency, and the learner’s affective state for satisfaction.
